A common component of autism spectrum disorder is sensory integration dysfunction (SID) which occurs when the body over- or under-responds to input from the different senses. SID most commonly affects a child’s ability to respond to touch, pressure, balance, or temperature, but may also affect their perception of other senses too. A child who has SID may respond to sensory input in a dangerous or socially inappropriate way or may have a difficult time concentrating on a task at hand. Our sensory gym is designed to provide the child with SID the opportunity to receive the sensory input they need for their development while helping to gain an awareness of and control over those inputs that are distracting.
