About Music Therapy

Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals of all ages. Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses. Music therapy interventions can be designed to:

  • Promote wellness
  • Manage stress
  • Alleviate pain
  • Express feelings
  • Enhance memory
  • Improve communication
  • Promote physical rehabilitation

At the Growing Together Therapeutic Center, our Music Therapy program works to:

  • Regulate the sensory system
  • Increase language production
  • Increase social skills
  • Improve attention and engagement

What Can Be Expected During Therapy Sessions?

During the course of their music therapy, children will be videotaped with permission, and data will be collected about their behavior during the sessions as a means of gauging their progress. Items that are assessed include:

  • Eye contact
  • Musical behaviors related to attention, communication and developmental skills
  • Specific/individual goals
